Customer Success Story: Gary Yamamoto Custom Beef
How does a professional fisherman become involved in
the cattle business?
Ask Gary Yamamoto, the owner of a custom beef operation in Palestine,
Texas. Yamamoto is a professional fisherman who also
owns Yamamoto Custom Baits, a plastic bait
manufacturing operation in Page, Arizona. He became
interested in the Wagyu cattle breed and bought the
foundation of his full-blood herd from Shogo Takeda,
Takeda Farms, Hokkaido, Japan, in 1998.
Jim Quevreaux, who works in the Wagyu cattle operation, said that they
breed their Wagyu bulls to Angus and Angus-cross
cows to produce the F1s they ship to the feedlot,
and become the meat that can be purchased from
YamaBeef.
Yamamoto’s 1500 cows and 500 bulls are spread over five ranches in
east Texas. Quevreaux said they are currently
working toward streamlining their operations and
retaining more of their calves.
He said they have used CattleMax since 2001 to manage their vertically
integrated beef operation after switching from
another cattle software program because he liked the
enhanced features included in CattleMax.
“We track calves from pasture to packer,” Quevreaux said.
He said they use the custom reports feature in CattleMax to create the
specialized reports they need such as a list of
bulls by sires, or a list of cattle by age.
Quevreaux said he also appreciates the technical support Cattlesoft
offers to its customers.
